It was towards the end of Defoe’s life that he wrote his
great novels. By far the most famous of his works is Robinson Crusoe.
It is thought to have been inspired by the real-life shipwreck story of
Alexander Selkirk who spent four years stranded on the island of Mç–½ a Tierra
in 1704-09. In 1966 this island was renamed Robinson Crusoe Island.
Defoe died on 24 April 1731, possibly in hiding from those
to whom he owed money. His cause of death was probably a stroke. He was buried
in Bunhill Fields in London and in 1870 a statue was erected there in his
memory..
