A femicide occurs and shocks public opinion. The press reports on it and offers details for a time. Soon after, a television channel releases a story “based on true events.” Or a film. A band composes a song about it. Eventually, a fashion house launches merchandise tied to that femicide. Stories of femicides, or aspects of them, have become objects of cultural consumption–in film, literature, and even high-end women’s fashion. The violent death of a woman has been marketed as a commodity aimed at other women.

Lydiette Carri?n–author of La fosa de agua–explores in this book the ways in which femicides have been narrated and mythologized, becoming, at least since the second half of the twentieth century, vehicles for positioning consumer products while reinforcing stereotyped images of femininity and gendered violence.

These pages examine the representation of femicide in Western culture, as well as in other historical moments and geographies. The book also investigates the apparent fascination some women have with certain criminal stories and the reasons behind what seems to be a trend sparked by true crime series.
