ENGLISH DESCRIPTION

In March 2020, the leaders of the Mexican political parties PAN, PRI and PRD met at Claudio X. Gonz?lez’s mansion to devise a strategy that would allow them to regain power. Two years earlier, in 2018, the coalition Juntos Haremos Historia (Together We Will Make History), led by Andr?s Manuel L?pez Obrador and Morena, had taken the presidency from them–and that defeat hit them hard. The new opposition was born disoriented, wounded, and unsteady. But the media, intellectual, academic, and business elites represented by the son of a billionaire and by Gustavo de Hoyos, then head of one of the country’s major business unions (Coparmex), gave this opposition meaning and direction.

Thus, the three major parties joined in an electoral coalition. For the first time, they ran with joint candidates in a federal midterm election (2021) and a presidential one (2024). However, it soon became clear that they had never built a national project and stood before the electorate empty-handed, united only by their hatred of L?pez Obrador. The defeat in both elections was, in short, dramatic. Their presidential candidate, X?chitl G?lvez; the accumulated discredit; and their outdated platform led to the loss of registration of the PRD and a free fall for both the PRI and the PAN. The electoral coalition was unprecedented and defined one of the two poles into which contemporary politics has split. Yet it is not entirely new. These are the same forces that have long run for the nation’s votes since Mexico became Mexico conservatives and liberals, left and right.

The book you hold in your hands was censored and withdrawn by the publisher that originally released it. ?lvaro Delgado and Alejandro P?ez Varela have described this in detail. The authors and hosts of The Journalists later wrote The Right and The Left –two explosive bestsellers that form part of the trilogy concluding here, with The Dispute for Mexico’s return to bookstores, revised 2025-2026 edition, a contemporary classic that endured over time and could not be erased.
